I-84 is one of Connecticut’s most important, yet overly crowded roads and A.H. Harris was given the unique opportunity and privilege to take part in the reconstruction of this highway. The estimated completion date for the reconstruction is 2019 and the major improvements would include widened lanes in both directions, the “S” curve alignment eliminated, and improved interchange ramp configurations. Empire Paving Inc. and Yonkers Contracting Co., Inc. came together on a joint venture as I-84 Constructors to complete this major undertaking. A.H. Harris was able to prove the strength and flexibility of Harris 1500 and the following are multiple structures that were done with the formidable Harris formwork.
I-84 Structure #01224:
Harris1500 was used to form the wing walls and abutments as shown. In this picture, they are setting forms to pour the back wall on both abutments. Some parts of the abutment reach up to about 22ft high and the completed portion of the abutments run 200ft long.
I-84 Structure #06284:
This is one of the taller structures that towers about 28ft high. Some challenges were presented in designing the formwork because of the odd shape, width and height of the abutment, but the forms continued to prove that it can handle such a feat.
I-84 Hamilton Ave Pier:
This is one of the piers on Hamilton Avenue that tops out at about 25ft high and tapers at the left end. There are two piers and two abutments for this bridge that I-84 Constructors started to pour.
There are other minor structures that have been poured and constructed, e.g., the abutments and wing walls for the Pedestrian Bridge over Mad River, but a majority of these massive structures are done in two or more stages. The structures pictured in this article show stage one close to completion and still have multiple stages to go. A.H. Harris continues to provide both material and technical support for the remaining stages of the job.
This project has made history with A.H. Harris because of its achievement in selling the most Harris 1500 Panels on a project. Around 12,000 SqFt. of forms have been sold, which include (70) 8’x8’ Giant Panels and (50) 4’x8’ Giant Panels. A.H. Harris continues to excel in customer satisfaction with the Harris 1500 system and formwork solutions. The following are those who have been instrumental in the success of this ongoing project:
FSD Sales Specialist, Rob LeClerc – Works with the contractor to stay on top of the project and with any issues that may arise.
FSD Technical Group Leader, Mark Bochenek –Reviews structural integrity of formwork designs and drawings.
FSD Technician, Ro Valenzuela – Designs and creates drawings for formwork solutions.
