I would like to take you back in time to 1916, when Arthur H. Harris got his start as a small trucking company based in New Britain, CT. Being an over the road hauler, Arthur was painfully aware of the condition of roads and bridges and in 1934 he developed and patented a load transfer device that provided our entry in the road and bridge market. The company and its accomplishments continued to grow. Here are just a few of those landmarks:
- 1945 was the beginning of the Post-World War II construction boom and AH Harris played an active role.
- In 1959 we began to expand into other states, with our first satellite office in Hyde Park, just outside of Boston.
- In 1999, we moved south with our first Virginia location.
- In 2002 we completed the acquisition of MacFarlane Steel and HarMac Rebar and Steel was formed
- In 2010 Harris 1500 was born!
- In 2012 we completed the asset purchase of Barker Steel.
- Most recently in June of 2015, we completed the recapitalization of AH Harris in order to focus on growth opportunities.
This year we celebrate 100 years of service! This is an amazing accomplishment and one of the reasons A.H. Harris has been able to not only survive, but grow, is because of the foundation that was instilled in this organization in 1916 by Arthur Harris. Do not be afraid of change. Change has been constant in our 100 year history. Change will continue, but our core, our pride, our foundation, has not changed.
We remain committed to our Mission Statement: “Through business partnerships we will be the acknowledged Supplier of Choice, providing the highest quality products and professional services. We pledge to lead our industry with knowledge and technology while maintaining yesterday’s values.”
With that mission in mind our thematic goal for 2016 is Be 3D. It is a spin on our version of being 3 dimensional. “Develop, Differentiate and Deliver”.
This year we will invest in developing our team by providing the tools, technology and training needed to be productive. This will include launching Phase 2 of our Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool that is utilized by the Account Managers on IPads. The CRM will allow us to be more responsive to our Customers’ needs and improve internal communication. Throughout this year we will conduct additional training on Customer Service, Product Knowledge and Forming and Shoring parts and pieces to all Associates. Finally, we will continue to refine our processes and procedures to reduce errors and improve efficiency.
These investments will differentiate us. We are committed to providing value and knowledge to our Customers and our Vendor Partners. AH Harris will strive to be more than a supplier, but rather a resource for solving job site challenges. It is our goal to be partners and leaders in the construction industry.
We are committed to delivering the tools and training our Associates needed to grow and compete; to deliver knowledge as well as quality products in a timely fashion at a competitive price to our Customers; to deliver growth to our Vendor partners and our Investors.
Part of Arthur’s formula for success was to find a way to continue to evolve and differentiate. Each year I ask myself and our leaders, what are we doing to differentiate our teams, our products, AH Harris? If as business leaders we can’t answer the question “why us?” then we become one dimensional – a commodity.
In 2016 AH Harris will continue to grow and change and be 3D: Develop, Differentiate, Deliver.
