Tilt-up or tilt-wall/tilt-slab is a construction method in which concrete elements (walls, columns, etc.) are formed horizontally on a concrete slab and – once cured – lifted (or “tilted”) to a vertical position and braced into place until the remaining structural components (such as roofs, intermediate floors and walls) are secured. Tilt-up is the fastest form of construction from conception to completion. Reduced construction schedule also means a shorter time period for the construction loan. It also means that the facility – depending on purpose – will be open to generate revenue or commence service faster. Another Tilt-up benefit is the reduction in insurance costs: The hard wall design of tilt-up often serves as a deterrent from theft and break-ins. Additionally, the hard wall design provides beneficial fire resistance, typically providing a reduction in insurance premiums. The durability of concrete also provides a hard surface which can significantly reduce damage from a number of external factors such as vehicles, equipment, animals, vandalism etc. The lifespan of a structure is substantially increased by the use of concrete (100+ years). On the sustainability side, you will be glad to hear Concrete is considered a green building material since its using recycled materials.
Below: Presented by the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, this video describes, in detail, the process of constructing and erecting tilt-up concrete panels:
We see Tilt-up construction applications for a variety of projects, including but not limited to warehouses, agricultural structures, correctional facilities, educational facilities, residential buildings, offices, hotels, buildings of faith and many more. Sandwich panels help absorb sound, energy and insulate temperature. Walls can be constructed to be airtight and/or waterproof which makes tilt-up construction an attractive solution even for wineries and food storage facilities. Historians are not sure if the Ancient Romans or the Middle East came up with the initial design, but it’s reasonable to say Tilt-up came a long way over time. Today, A.H. Harris is excited to offer you the latest technology and highest quality of Tilt-up solutions and materials.
