Our graduate and intern programs are an integral part of our operations. We help young, educated and passionate people taking their first steps into rewarding careers within the industry. From engineers to supply chain managers, data analysts, accountants and people manager, the construction sector has so much more to offer than physical work on jobsites. From day one, our graduates and interns, in both temporary and permanent roles, are a genuine part of our team and treated like family. They gain valuable insights into real world problems and solutions while helping us stay close to our community and new trends (academic, technology related etc.). Many of our ex-graduates are now in leadership positions throughout the organization. Some of our interns start working for us once they finish school/college. They bring fresh ideas to the table and help a century old business stay ahead of the innovation curve. You’ll be excited to hear it’s these next-generation workers who help drive change around here. They work in our engineering teams, estimating, marketing, strategy and operations. Let’s hear it from them!
“I came to A.H. Harris fresh out of college working as an intern in the Marketing department with Marketing & Communications Director Sally Harris and E-Commerce Manager Martin Hennig. Throughout my time as an intern, the entire Harris team was always willing to help and answered any questions I threw at them. Harris was the perfect place for me to be as a post-grad due to the fact that I was able to dive into different projects and develop various skills. Within a couple months into my internship, I began working full time as a Marketing Assistant. As part of the marketing team, I am responsible for social media channels (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Blog), creating promotional flyers, developing ideas for events, and anything else associated with marketing that is thrown my way. If you are a young professional, I would highly recommend joining the A.H. Harris team. This team is constantly encouraging one another and wants to see us post-college students excel to the best of our abilities.”
Depending on season, demand and state of the industry, we employ anywhere between 3-10+ interns a year. Some of our helpers/learners come back whenever school is out and they get a chance. Our interns are getting paid, unless their educational institution does not allow it in order to get academic credits. Our graduates are on payroll like any other employee. We regularly attend and participate in career fairs at local colleges and universities.
“Attending Central Connecticut State University for the Construction Management program, an internship course was required to graduate. A.H. Harris and Sons had reached out to our program looking for potential interns to work part time while still in school. With still having yet to fulfil my internship requirement, I sent in my application. I got the call from our own Bruce Wardwell looking to take me in for an interview. Long story short, everything fell together and I found myself at this great company working as an estimator. The internship was only the beginning working for a company so focused on developing talent from within. I since then have had the great pleasure of moving into the forming and shoring side of the company and then onto the operations team. During this progression through my young career I have been able to work alongside and learn from the most tenured experts in the industry. This commitment to attaining and growing talent fresh out of university is one of the many ways A.H. Harris sets itself apart from the competition and keeps the company staffed with the most knowledgeable, passionate people around. Since my hire five and a half years ago, A.H. Harris has continued to pull from the university talent pool with great success and is only looking to strengthen these programs in which young professionals have a great opportunity to grow within the company.”
“A.H. Harris is a fantastic company for young, energetic students and recent graduates looking to start a career. The company is focused on building strong leadership qualities in their employees and promoting from within. I’ve been with the company for just over 5 years now. Some of my favorite things about working here are that I don’t feel like there are limits on what I can do as long as I’m willing to put in the effort, I am constantly learning and becoming stronger professionally, and the company has a family like culture that is rare these days.” Kevin also joined us from www.ccsu.edu.
Learning never stops, neither for our grads, interns nor longtime associates. We run various learning programs throughout the year and provide online resources to our workforce. Through a program we call “Harris University“, all employees are encouraged to take product and service classes, most of them put together by our vendors. As an incentive, workers earn credits (“Harris Bucks”) for completed courses which then can use to obtain limited edition Harris branded gear (swag that is very popular around here!). While many courses are completed online at individual pace, we also put together classroom trainings as part of “Harris University”. Over usually 2-3 days leading up to our annual “Harris Summit” (a vendor expo and awards event), new or newly promoted employees are learning from industry experts in an offsite setting.
As an employee of A.H. Harris and Son Inc., one can also earn a degree through Post University’s Accelerated Degree Program at a reduced tuition rate. Through the Post University Partners in Education Program, our team members can enroll in an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or certificate program, and take courses completely online from a fully-accredited university. This applies to both associates and immediate family. Connecticut residents also have the option of taking courses at one of our four regional locations: Waterbury, Meriden, Danbury and Norwalk.
